Bio

Hi everyone! My name is Rachel and I am currently a PhD student within the Molecular Genetics and Genomics Program at Washington University in St. Louis. Entering graduate school, I knew I wanted to develop computational skills to study epigenetic mechanisms in cancer. This interest originates from my first experience with scientific research during my undergraduate training, where I studied the effects of natural and synthetic estrogen exposure in ovarian carcinogenesis. Fast-forward a few years, and the goal of my thesis work is to investigate the function of chromatin remodeling complexes, and other epigenetic modifiers, in pediatric acute leukemias. Outside of the lab, I like to read, watch football (Go Bills!), and travel. I'm excited to be a part of this great organization and look forward to working with you!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Chromatin Remodeling in Cancer

Mutations in chromatin remodeling complexes are among the most common occurrences in cancer. However, how these complexes function mechanistically is still under investigation. For this project, you will write a comprehensive review about what is currently known about the function of chromatin remodelers in cancer. Alternatively, you can research a particular complex-of-interest (e.g. SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex).

Teaching experience

As an undergraduate, I was a mentor for the Canisius Science Scholars Program which aimed to establish a community for students within the STEM field and I was also a biology tutor for two years. Additionally, I was a TA for a graduate-level genetics course at Washington University in St. Louis.
