Energy storage, climate change, heat transfer

Bio

I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate student at MIT, currently working in the Atomic Simulations and Energy Laboratory. My research focuses on how to store large amounts of energy to then be converted to electricity when demand is high. This will allow the use of more renewable energy sources like wind and solar power that don't produce electricity when you need it. Overall, I am motivated by solving important problems like climate change and making the largest impact possible. Outside of the lab, I love music and play trumpet, guitar, drums, and anything else I can get my hands on. I also love listening to podcasts and learning about the world. When possible, I love to travel and see the world.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Decarbonizing the Grid: How to get to 0% emissions

The goal of this project would be to explore the various potential carbon-neutral energy sources in order to assess what it would take to decarbonize the electricity grid. By weighing each source and accounting for energy storage needs, the student can design potential carbon-free grids for a variety of locations around the world based on their availability to sunlight, wind, and other key geographic features.

What does a carbon-free future look like?

The student would perform an investigation into what would need to change on both the small and large scale in our daily lives to eliminate our carbon footprint. Depending on interest, they would take a deeper dive into either the science or economics behind this global transformation.
