Abstract or project description

I would like to explore the field of ethics in artificial intelligence, particularly in relation to its usage at nonprofits that lack the funding for data privacy and protection. My goal with this project is to propose a solution to this issue in the form of a research paper that entails practices and guidelines to be implemented by these nonprofit organizations so that they can take advantage of the numerous benefits of the rapidly growing field of AI while still ensuring their data remains protected. I am interested in this because I have experience working on AI projects at under-funded nonprofits. My interests in high school have aligned with the mission of using new technologies, such as the emerging field of generative AI, to make tangible social impact. As part of my internships at youth homelessness nonprofits in the Bay Area (Youth Spirit Artworks and Larkin Street Youth Services), I have been developing chatbots with the aim of raising awareness to the crises of youth homelessness in California, fostering volunteer and donor engagement, and improving accessibility of shelters to youth in need of assistance. One major obstacle in this project has been the importance of preserving privacy, especially concerning the data of the youth at these shelters. Through this project, I seek to explore solutions to this challenge and provide nonprofits organizations a secure path forward to utilizing AI to improve society!
