Summary
There are many factors to consider when discussing the causes of declining mental health in adolescents. One factor is frequent social media use, which may be strongly correlated with poor mental health. To add the differences in such rates by race/ethnicity into discussion, this project examines the extent to which race/ethnicity impacts the association between social media usage and adolescent mental health. With literature review using 8 studies from Google Scholar databases, I will identify and synthesize recent, relevant research conducted across various institutions that consider the role of race/ethnicity. Despite the limited research surrounding this topic, there was a common suggestion among all eight studies: certain racial/ethnic experiences may be a significant way that race/ethnicity affects the association between social media use and adolescent mental health. It may explain the prevalence of mental health issues among racial/ethnic minorities. Therefore, this study suggests that race/ethnicity is likely an important factor to attend to when considering the association between social media use and adolescent mental health.

My name is Hamare Santo, currently living in Edmonton, Canada. By far, this is the most rewarding experience I had, which pushed me to dive deep into the field of psychology. Specifically, mental health in adolescents by race. I chose this topic because of multiple unfortunate situations that are yet to be solved in my diverse community. Now that I have finished my poster, I will fulfill my current aim of presenting at various events, including the Symposium as a start. This will mark the beginning of my goal to resolve the stigma in my community and beyond.

About my mentor
“My mentor is quite knowledgeable about psychology---the information, the paper/poster structures etc to be exact. Even if it is the slightest mistake (that could possibly hinder our progress) I make in my project, my mentor is quick to point it out for better results. My mentor is wonderful at enhancing my understanding of the topic through discussions. My mentor is understanding about me, and will definitely be available to meet your needs, even if you are either an individual worker or team worker.”
