Expertise

Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Hackathons and high-tech startups

Bio

I am an engineer at heart with a passion for creating software that makes impossibly hard tasks possible for humans. My 4+ years of research experience helped me identify and break down those tasks (or "research problems") into manageable small projects. I love working and experimenting in the intersection of AI and languages (sometimes you may know it as NLP). I am originally from Uzbekistan and came to the US to get my college degree in CS. In my free time, I like reading books about startups, run mini-marathons and play soccer.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Let's build a Google Translate model for a rare language!

In this project, we can literally bring a language to (digital) life by creating a translation model from scratch and releasing it to the public at the end. We will be using the state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to train and tune our models for performance. Very importantly, we will explore the scarce resources around this rare languages by connecting with the community of speakers, finding online resources, and creating datasets that NLP models can digest. Main learning objectives from the project would be to understand the role and importance of data science, gain practical knowledge on how to use and improve NLP models and evaluate our results in the real world! I expect a lot of fun and discovery in the process!

Coding skills

python, Java, JavaScript

Languages I know

Uzbek, native, Russian, beginner

Teaching experience

In the past, I have mentored college students for a variety of general and major specific classes. I have also led dozens of technical workshops as part of the Society of Competitive Programmers at the University of South Florida. More recently, I have mentored early college students and got them involved in Machine Learning and NLP research by working on high-impact projects related to low-resource languages.
