Unraveling the Gut-Brain Connection: The Manifestations of Stress and Anxiety on the Gastrointestinal System

Started Oct. 17, 2023

Abstract or project description

Anxiety disorders are the world’s most common mental disorders, affecting nearly 4 in 10 adults as of 2023. While these disorders predominantly manifest as negative thoughts as well as feelings of discomfort, wariness, and awkwardness, it is crucial not to overlook the significance of physical symptoms. Ranging from shaking and sweating to fatigue and nausea, these symptoms affect an individual’s life. An often-overlooked physiological link is the communication between the gut and the brain. The gut microbiota- the collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in the digestive tract- is a key element in the interplay between the brain and the intestines. The connection between gut health and mental well-being relies on this microbiome which not only serves as nutrient absorption but a source of neurotransmitters modulating stress and anxiety. In this review, through a comprehensive investigation of stress and anxiety-induced gastrointestinal symptoms, we will explore the gut-brain axis. In addition, the function and role of the gut microbiome in relation to these disorders will be examined as a source of potential therapeutics.
