How does art show the contrast between the women in Sparta and Athens?

Abstract or project description
This paper demonstrates how art can show the contrast between the women in Sparta and Athens. The women in Sparta and Athens lived very different lifestyles because of their city’s opposing belief systems. Spartan women were known to have many more rights than other ancient women of their time, like Athenians. Art has a large role in history, even compared to texts, because of its visual depictions with meaning. It can be interpreted in a variety of ways and reflects the culture of where it was created. In this paper, I will analyze artworks to learn about the role of women in Athens and Sparta.
