Optimal Biomarker Utilization for Early Detection of Cardiovascular Disease
Started Apr. 15, 2024
Abstract or project description
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a range of conditions that negatively affect the heart, like heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension, making it one of the leading causes of death globally. Current biomarkers for cardiovascular disease are inconsistent and don't always provide accurate results for early detection. Biomarkers like troponin and C reactive protein (CRP) can show signs of heart problems, but cannot be used to confidently conclude patient cardiovascular disease alone. A promising alternative method is the use of multiple biomarkers for multiplexed detection of cardiovascular disease. Here, I discuss CVD biomarkers and the current state of CVD sensing, with a future outlook towards noninvasive testing using different biofluids like saliva and sweat, as well as multiplexed detection using industry standard blood draws.
