Pneumonia vs. COVID-19: AI for Differentiating Between Pneumonia and COVID-19 from Chest X-rays

Started Sept. 30, 2024

Abstract or project description

Project Goal: Build an AI system that can differentiate between pneumonia and COVID-19-related pneumonia by comparing two chest X-ray images: one from the patient's current scan and one from a baseline (such as a normal X-ray or a previous pneumonia scan). Approach: Use pairwise image classification: compare a COVID-19 X-ray and a non-COVID pneumonia X-ray to classify the disease. Train a dual-input CNN model (or use Siamese networks) to detect differences in radiological features between pneumonia caused by bacterial infections versus viral infections (specifically COVID-19). Outcome: A diagnostic tool that helps healthcare providers distinguish between bacterial pneumonia and viral pneumonia (COVID-19), which can guide treatment protocols.
