Highlighting the neurobiological underpinnings of addiction and the ways that addiction impacts global health

Started Jan. 24, 2024

Abstract or project description

Varshu is writing a comprehensive literature review and perspective on the neurobiological roots of addiction, as well as the ways that addiction impacts society through global health. Through the realization that information about addiction is not communicated or elaborated on clearly to young learners, Varshu hopes to discuss addiction and its neurobiological underpinnings in a detailed yet digestible way. In her paper she will first do a thorough review and summary on the literature covering the brain cells and regions involved in addiction, as well as the ways specific substances and experiences alter the function of those cells and regions. Next, she will present a personal account from someone who has experienced addiction in their lives. Finally, she will conclude her paper with a summary of research on the impact that addiction has on global health.
