The effects of ethanol on drosophila melanogaster reproductive capacity

Abstract or project description

Sree will be working on the effects of ethanol on fruit fly reproductive capacity (RC). Specifically, she will house flies with media that contains differing amounts or no ethanol, then measure the amount of flies after a certain amount of time, which will be a measure of RC. In parallel, she will also assess aspects of fruit fly mating that may explain any differences that may exist in RC. This will require overhead video recording which will allow her to manually track aspects of movement or time to copulation. She may potentially use AI-assisted automated tracking tools to collect this data. After collecting several features across multiple conditions, she will apply statistical tests to assess the validity of her hypotheses.
