Project Portfolio

Would the abortion debate in the United States change if fetuses were granted legal personhood?

Started Apr. 3, 2024

Abstract or project description

Explore the complications in abortion arguments if the fetus were considered an actual person. Would the 14th amendment be working in favor of the anti-abortion argument? Would all arguments in favor of abortion no longer be valid? For example, many argue that abortion is simply a medical procedure. But, if the fetus is granted personhood the procedure would be murder. Additionally, arguments resulting from religion would be proven correct because the fetus should then have the right to life. It would be considered valuable and deserving of protection. In the project, timelines like fertilization, heartbeat, and later in pregnancy would be analyzed in order to demonstrate a comparison. How can this fetus be deemed a person? Would abortion no longer be as much of a complicated subject?
