What is the impact of emerging large (>100 satellites) LEO constellations on near-Earth space today, and in the near future?

Abstract or project description
Since 1957, near-Earth space has accommodated a drastically increasing number of active and defunct satellites from multiple commercial, private, and government entities [1]. Each satellite launch came with a relatively larger number of support structure, e.g., rocket bodies, and payload fairings, which are typically left in orbit with no controlled means of disposal. This accumulation of mission-related remains and expired satellites, collectively referred to as space debris, can interfere with essential satellite-based services, and inhibit future space missions. Accumulation of space debris is none more evident than in low-Earth orbit (LEO), which includes altitudes up 2000 km. In response, in this paper, we predict the growth in number of LEO satellites for the next fifty years, and the associated effect on near-Earth space, particularly on operational satellite-based systems, observational astronomy, and potential space missions.
