Neuroscience Within Near-Death Experiences

Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) are underexplored and fascinating phenomena that have many unanswered medical and basic sceince questions. The challenges of studying these pheneomena are well reported, as access to samples, tissue changes as a result of NDE, and other factors complicate the analysis of this phenomena at a deep level. Despite these hurdles, singificant advances in this research area have been made from both clinical and basic scientific understanding of NDE through observational and experimental studies. These advances are concentrated in the following domains: molecular mechanisms of hypoxia, neural circuits affected by NDE, and treatments for NDE. In this review article, I cover the details of these advances and future directions for the field of NDE research.
