Combating Mental Health Stigma with Artificial Intelligence: Improving Societal Understanding and Perception

Started Feb. 23, 2023

Abstract or project description

Mental health stigma remains a significant barrier to individuals seeking help and achieving optimal treatment outcomes. The pervasive nature of stigma is known to exacerbate mental health issues and deter individuals from accessing much-needed support. This research project aims to investigate the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in combating mental health stigma and improving societal understanding of mental health disorders. We will explore how AI-driven tools, such as chatbots, natural language processing, and social media analysis, can be utilized to enhance public awareness, dispel misconceptions, and foster empathy towards individuals with mental health challenges.

The research will begin with a comprehensive literature review on the current state of mental health stigma, the factors contributing to its perpetuation, and the use of AI in mental health care. We will then identify AI-driven interventions that hold promise for addressing mental health stigma, such as public health campaigns, educational tools, and targeted social media content. Next, we will conduct an in-depth analysis of these AI interventions to assess their effectiveness, scalability, and potential for widespread adoption.

The anticipated outcomes of this research project include an increased understanding of the ways AI can be harnessed to tackle mental health stigma and the development of recommendations for implementing AI-driven tools in public health and educational settings. By exploring the potential of AI to reshape societal perceptions of mental health disorders, this project aims to contribute to the reduction of stigma and the improvement of mental health care access and outcomes for individuals worldwide.
