How do Anesthesia and Diabetes Interact in the Surgical Setting?
Started June 25, 2024
Abstract or project description
Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common endocrine diseases in the world. The condition results from either an insufficient amount of insulin and/ or an inadequate tissue response to insulin. Because Diabetes mellitus affects about 1 in 10 Americans (CDC), it is imperative for anesthesiologists to know the microvascular and macrovascular complications before going into a surgery. Additionally, they should know the different pharmacology for Diabetes and how they should alter their standard plan for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care. This review provides readers with an overview of anesthesia as well as a deep dive into how diabetes works. Furthermore, this review provides a detailed explanation of the pharmacology used in anesthesia and diabetes respectively, and explains the relationship between anesthesia and diabetes in a surgical setting.
