Impact of farmer pesticide use on soil and water health in Burlington County, NJ
Started May 30, 2024
Abstract or project description
This research paper investigates the impacts of conventional farming practices on soil and water health in Burlington County, NJ, particularly focusing on Crosswicks Creek and other water bodies in the Delaware River Watershed. It aims to provide specific data on the effects caused by conventional and organic fertilizers in this region, with the goal/aim of contributing to local environmental research and better agricultural practices. Results indicate that soil from conventional farms in comparison to organic has elevated pH levels and higher concentrations of phosphates and nitrates, while having significantly lower populations of benthic macroinvertebrates. Essentially, traditional fertilizer exhibits adverse effects on both soil and water quality, whereas organic fertilizer is more suited for environmental purposes. The broader implications of this research include influencing future practices and policies through the Agricultural Advisory Board of Chesterfield, promoting sustainable farming practices and contributing to broader environmental protection efforts and future research in similar regions.
