Abstract or project description

In the nervous system, information is transmitted through electrical signals. This is done by neurons, which send electrical impulses in the form of action potentials. Some neurons use saltatory conduction, a method by which the impulse jumps from point to point. This relies on voltage-gated ion channels to be concentrated in specific locations. Ion channels are needed to initiate and propagate action potentials. This review summarizes several methods of sodium channel localization, which is crucial for normal neuronal function. This process is a challenge for cells due to several factors, such as the fluidity of the cell membrane. This review explores sodium channel localization at various locations, and interactions between the various proteins involved.
