Examining the Relationship Between Bilingual Code-Switching and Executive Functioning
Started Nov. 13, 2023
Abstract or project description
This paper explores the relationship between bilingualism and executive functioning by looking at the phenomenon of code-switching. Building upon recent psycholinguistic research, it defines key terms–code-switching, bilingualism, and executive functioning–and examines their connections. Experimental methods are reviewed to elucidate these concepts. My primary question is whether heightened code-switching correlates with enhanced executive functioning, and I consider how variables like age, environment, and familiarity with both languages influence the answer. Ultimately, I conclude that code-switching correlates with enhanced executive function when it is done intentionally and I define what this involves. Overall, this research points towards possible shared mechanisms between bilingual code-switching and executive functioning skills, offering valuable insights into important cognitive processes.
