Trends of Laboratory-Detected Heavy Metals in Children 0-5

Abstract or project description

The student will write a paper about heavy metals (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Se) in infant food. She will begin with an introduction about what heavy metals are, how they get into infant food, the effects of these heavy metals on children, and current government regulation in place to mitigate the risk of these heavy metals. Using NHANES data, she will conduct a descriptive analysis in R about trends over time of the occurrence of metals, specifically in ages 0-5. It is hypothesized that this analysis will show either increasing levels of heavy metals or consistent unhealthy levels of these metals over time. Finally, she will discuss the potential solutions to mitigate the effects of these heavy metals in children.
