About

Hello! My name is Ellie Koff and my Polygence Project is about Gender Expression and it's impacts on students intellectual potential. I chose to work on this project because I noticed a disparity in the number of female students in my advanced math and science classes, and a male students in my advanced English classes.

Gender Expression in School: How is Stereotyping from Peers and Superiors Affecting my Intellectual Growth?

Started June 1, 2023

Abstract or project description

Gender or gender expression as a social construction has been increasingly discussed in all environments. It is talked about on the news, in blogs, and more recently in high schools. Schools in Oregon have begun talking about gender expression as soon as Kindergarten, this, of course, has sparked a lot of controversies. The left views gender as fluid and adopts the social construction idea, however, the right believes that gender is an extension of sex with defined roles and behavior. All this talk begs the question of how gender expression stereotypes in a classroom from peers and superiors, specifically in high school, affect the intellectual and maturity growth of students. In this paper, I will discuss what gender expression is, and present how females and males differ in high school classrooms based on research. This information will be provided to create a controlled environment for my analysis allowing me to see how gender expression stereotypes and interactions affect intellectual growth.
