How do exercise-related physiological changes to the heart affect the risk and incidence of atrial fibrillation?

Started Nov. 7, 2023

Abstract or project description

This systematic review aims to analyze how exercise affects the risk and incidence of atrial fibrillation via physiological changes to the heart, such as those relating to the alteration of the cardiac conduction system and overall structure of myocytes. This paper will start with an introduction and brief summary of atrial fibrillation, followed by a deep dive into the various physiological changes to the heart observed by engaging in intense forms of exercise. The paper will then discuss the possible connection between atrial fibrillation and such changes, thereby posing a potential mechanistic explanation for links between different types of intense exercise and atrial fibrillation.
