Abstract or project description
Pregnant African American women are three times more likely to die during childbirth than non-Hispanic White women. Many studies have identified a lack of adequate care due to biases and stereotypes as preventable contributors to discrepancies in African American maternal health. While attention has rightfully centered on childbirth, African American women are also more likely to experience postpartum depression than other racial groups. This review will examine possible causes for increased rates of postpartum depression among African American women, including access to mental health services, lack of adequate health care during pregnancy, and high-risk pregnancies. Concurrently, the review will seek solutions to this issue, including increasing access to counseling services, providing care packages, and educating healthcare providers to better treat African American patients.
