Mitigating the Harmful Effects of Hydrochloric Acid through Robotic Intervention

Abstract or project description
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a dangerous chemical with widespread use in a variety of industrial, manufacturing, and scientific laboratory applications. In addition to being a strong acid capable of producing serious burns, HCl gives off a vapor that is toxic to inhale. And while there exist strict safety protocols for humans working with HCl, it is well-known that to err is human. For these reasons, this project will explore the potential for robotic intervention to mitigate the harmful capacity of HCl. Specifically, the plan is to build a robot that can extract HCl from dangerous scenarios and subsequently transport it to an approved receptacle. The project will have a significant hardware component and thus will contain elements of product design in addition to exploring chemical mitigation techniques for HCl. In the end, the final product will be available on display via presentation at a venue to be determined later.
