Allelopathic Effects of the Cynara Cardunculus on Coastal Sage Scrub Plants
Started July 30, 2024
Abstract or project description
The invasive species Cynara cardunculus (artichoke thistle) has been observed to negatively impact native plant communities in the coastal sage scrub, potentially through allelopathic interactions. Understanding the existence or extent of allelopathic influences by artichoke thistle on native species is crucial for developing effective management strategies to restore and maintain the health of native species. Therefore, this leads to the question: which parts, if any, of decaying and living artichoke thistle have a negative allelopathic effect on the germination proportion and rate of plants native to the coastal sage habitat?
