A System for Monitoring Carbon Dioxide and Volatile Organic Compounds in A Classroom Environment

Started Apr. 18, 2024

Abstract or project description

Concerns regarding indoor air quality (IAQ) in educational environments have gained significant attention due to their potential impact on student health and productivity. An underlying issue with systems that monitor IAQ parameters is the lack of proper calibration and data validation. This research presents a calibrated approach to monitoring IAQ, focusing on detecting carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using Arduino-based technology. Inspired by previous research linking poor IAQ with student performance, this study aims to develop a system that efficiently measures and analyzes these parameters for use in educational facilities. The proposed system utilizes Arduino-based sensors and components, including CO2 and VOC sensors (SEN0159-MG811, SGP40), a temperature sensor (TMP36), and a real-time clock (DS3231), enabling real-time data collection and analysis. Preliminary results indicate that the system effectively detects changes in CO2 and VOC levels. Multiple experiments concluded that the VOC levels recorded by the system respond accurately to environmental changes. Additionally, when comparing the system to an industrial CO2 sensor, it showed similar results, validating its accuracy. This research emphasizes sensor calibration and validation, ensuring the system’s effectiveness for real-world classroom settings, offering a practical solution to improve IAQ in educational environments.
