The Changing Ideals of War as Reflected through Poetry of the First World War

Abstract or project description

This paper will look at World War I poetry as a mode through which to view the changing ideals of war. It will analyze the long-held values of war such as glory, sacrifice, and heroism and how these were challenged through World War I poetry. Additionally, it will look at how the horrors of World War I caused a cultural shift in the way war was perceived. Both the perspectives of the war poets themselves and other citizens living back at home will be considered.
