About

Hi! My name is Abigail, and I am a junior in high school in Atlanta, GA. I am interested in data analytics and water policies, and in my free time, I love reading Jane Austen and crocheting! I have been interested in data analytics, specifically data related to the environment, since my 9th-grade science fair project, where I examined environmental factors of hurricanes and tropical storms in the North Atlantic Ocean during ENSO years.

What drives winning in college basketball?

Started Mar. 9, 2023

Abstract or project description

This research project aimed to analyze a multitude of factors that could impact the winning percentage of a college basketball team, guided by the question, “What drives winning in college basketball?” To conduct this research, I used data from Sports Reference, a free data source for many sports, and other datasets to create my regression. Additionally, I took data from all 358 men’s and 361 women’s teams to compare factors against gender and ensure a representative sample. Using this data, I used regression modeling to identify significant variables and their relative impact on winning percentage. By identifying the most influential factors, teams can adjust their strategy in practice and on the court to increase their winning percentage.
