Summary

Music is a form of entertainment that has been instrumental to human culture. This literature review aims to highlight music's additional aspects in modern-day life from its biological effects on brain health and functioning. Many studies cite music’s wide range of effects to promote mental well-being, induce neuroplasticity, and improve cognitive performance in the workplace. These discoveries have brought about the fields of music medicine and music therapy for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and depression. These interventions can additionally work with neurodivergent populations to improve abilities, such as verbal communication for individuals with autism. Medical imaging studies have revealed neuroplastic changes in musically trained individuals, providing enhanced emotional, auditory, and speech processing. Numerous studies have additionally discussed the potential role of music in improving productivity and cognitive processing at work by determining the level of arousal music brings to an individual. Further studies are encouraged to examine the greater relationship between music and human productivity and vitalize the integration of music into various societal sectors to bring positive change to them. Music is truly an asset to human functioning, one that is yet to be fully explored and used for its full value. Keywords: neuroscience, audition, musical interventions, neuroplasticity, cognition

Project review

“I think the mentorship exceeded my expectations, I was able to get quality help for my paper, as well as ask things about resumes, finding research, and more! I think publishing also met my expectations, because there were a lot of options in the database to choose from, and it was helpful in helping me decide how I would be able to get my paper published.”
