Summary

This paper examines different transportation practices and policies between the Olympics and the Premier League. By looking from three perspectives, environmental, social, and economic, I analyzed the status quo concerning transportation for the two major sporting events. Now, the Olympics and the Premier League being structurally contrasting events, the former being concentrated regarding time and space while the latter being spread out concerning time and space, the leagues logically undertake the issue of sustainability, specifically for transportation, with extremely different approaches. The Olympics put much more effort into public transportation development; in fact, the game itself acted as a stimulus in improving public transit in the host cities. For the Premier League, the case was shown to be different. Being a league whose matches are held in a vast region over multiple months, the Premier League rather promotes more sustainable means of travel for fans compared to the Olympics, which attracts tens of thousands of tourists during the half a month of its game. From the lens of the economy, the problem of affordability rose as the issue in the improvement of transportation and opting for public transit for both the Premier League and the Olympics. I also explored the potential for improvement for better sustainability practices categorized by the aforementioned three aspects of sustainability. Currently, the transition to transportation sustainability is quite perfunctory, and thus their initiatives could be more profound.
