Project by Polygence alum Elif
Project's result
Through a multidisciplinary approach, I analyzed the current state of plastic waste management in Turkey and proposed a framework that could guide Turkey in adopting effective principles inspired by Germany’s EPR system.

Summary
Plastic waste, particularly single-use plastic, poses severe environmental and economic challenges for Turkey, especially with regard to its significant contribution to marine pollution in critical areas such as the Marmara Sea. The accumulation of plastic debris not only threatens marine ecosystems but also has a detrimental effect on local economies that rely on clean waters, such as tourism and fishing industries. This research discusses how Turkey may use Germany's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system to better manage plastic pollution. Proposals for Turkey are suggested following an analysis of international frameworks, especially those of Germany, to balance the economic and environmental needs for reduction in plastic waste that also meets international necessity.
