Writing Fundamentals for College Preparedness: Crafting Argumentative Essays for 15-16 year olds
Ever wonder how to win arguments and influence people? Try writing an essay! This six-week course introduces students to the fundamentals of the academic paper, one of the most powerful vehicles for making a point and taking a stance. Students will learn how to develop clear, well-supported arguments, all while employing proper grammar, citations, and paragraph structure. By choosing one of three pre-selected topics, students will produce a five-page academic essay that demonstrates their growth in brainstorming, researching, writing and revising — in short, all the necessary ingredients of critical thinking. The skills they learn will help them prepare for college assignments and be better communicators. Students will also receive two rounds of individual writing feedback to help support their paper's development. This course is restricted to 15-16 year olds in order for students to foster connections and allow for peer review.
