The Psychology of Social Connection: From Strangers to Deep Friendships
Humans are wired for connection, and even brief interactions can boost well-being. This course explores the science behind social connection, from talking to strangers to building deep friendships, through the lens of social psychology. We’ll examine its impact on health, success, and various fields like healthcare and business. Students will conduct mini-social experiments, analyze empirical research, and engage in discussions about topics like overcoming social anxiety, strengthening relationships, and the role of technology in connection.
Week by week curriculum
Week 1
Why is social connection so important? Why is loneliness detrimental to health? In this introductory session, we’ll explore the importance of social connection, get to know each other, review the course structure, and learn how to read and analyze empirical articles.
Week 2
Talking to strangers. We’ll examine the research on how talking to strangers can boost well-being, explore barriers like social anxiety and fear of rejection, and discuss strategies for overcoming them.
Week 3
Acquaintances and new relationships. We’ll explore the importance of connecting with acquaintances for belonging and what predicts forming new relationships. Students will select a topic for a deeper dive as their final project.
Week 4
How can we strengthen friendships? In this session, we’ll discuss key behaviors that strengthen friendships (and other close relationships). Students will bring an outline of their project idea for feedback.
Week 5
What makes a good conversation? In this session, we’ll explore what makes conversation good, why it can be hard, and behaviors that can increase connection, such as listening and question-asking. Students will give peer feedback on individual papers.
Week 6
How is AI and technology shaping how we connect? In this session, we’ll explore the (potential?) benefits and challenges of tech-driven connection, and whether AI may harm or enhance human connection. Students will each give a mini-presentation on their final research project.
