Bio
Welcome to Polygence! I'm Dr. Gibran Mangui and I grew up in Maryland (near Washington, DC). I’m looking forward to working with you on a project and sharing experiences/inspirations just like I received in the past from previous mentors. I completed my undergraduate education at the University of Rochester in Chemistry with a minor in Biology and Epidemiology. During my time at the University of Rochester, I was fortunate to mentor and teach over 60 students as a Chemistry Teaching Assistant. Additionally, through my collaboration with GlobeMed, I was a mentor for high school students looking to apply to college. Our mission was very similar to that of Polygence; we worked together with students to come up with a project to inspire a career path for them. I completed my Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and I am now finishing my Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center for further training. During my dental school education, I was a part of the ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program where we worked with faculty to develop teaching projects for elementary schools in Esteli, Nicaragua, Eleuthera, Bahamas, and Boston, MA. We worked closely with 300 children in all of these schools to create a teaching curriculum that would increase their awareness of oral health. I am excited to work with a mentee that may have an interest in chemistry, biology, public health, medicine, or dentistry.Project ideas
The development of stem cells in dentistry
This project would involve the research of stem cells in the use of healing in dentistry. This includes the use of plasma rich in growth factors.
Exploring careers in dentistry
This project will be focusing on exploring careers in the healthcare field. I will help the student explore their interest in healthcare and offer strategies to increase their opportunity and exposure in their field of interest. At the end of this project, the student will have a step-by-step plan to pursue their desired career in healthcare.
How to conduct a research project
This project will familiarize students with the tools to create a great research project in medicine. Once the basics of research are established, these principles can be applied to create a prototype project that will investigate a niche in medicine.
