Bio

My primary research interests lie in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Specifically, I am interested in social computing and algorithmic bias. Social computing is studying the ways in which technology impacts our communication, social interactions, and understanding of one another. Algorithmic bias work seeks to identify ways in which intelligent systems may be impacting marginalized groups differently, and identifying solutions to correct these issues. Outside of academics, one of my favorite hobbies is sewing and creating clothes. I have customized existing clothing pieces and designed and created pieces completely from scratch. While it time consuming and often challenging, sewing my own clothes is a very rewarding process.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Understanding Mental Health through Social Media

We recognize that social media can be a lens into the lives and wellbeing of individuals. As such multiple works in the social computing and health informatics space have looked to analyze social media for possible indicators of mental health. For a social media platform of interest to the student, we can study how useful social media posts, interactions, and other social media information can be in predicting and understanding mental health and mental illness. By surveying users to discuss mental health and collecting social media data, we can use statistical and machine learning tools to search for relationships between social media and mental health. It would be especially interesting to study this for a specific demographic, a niche social media platform or online community, or for a particular mental health condition.
