Bio
Hello! My name is Michelle and I am currently a third year PhD student at NYU in the sociology department. I was a mentor in high school, in college at UC Berkeley, and I am now a TA for NYU undergrads. I love teaching and have dedicated my life to it. My main areas of expertise include politics, social media, and gender/sexuality. I also have extensive experience researching social movements, social psychology, parenting and the family, and urban studies. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and still live here. In my free time, I love to play soccer, go hiking, ride my bike (while trying to avoid the crazy NYC drivers), go to the beach, and sit on my couch like a potato.Project ideas
Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.
The Mobilization of #BLM on Social Media
This project looks at how #BlackLivesMatter activists organize protests, marches, rallies, and meetings through social media platforms. Specifically, I look at which platforms activists choose to use and why, which methods are successful, and how relationships develop digitally.
Gender Inequality and the COVID-19 Pandemic
This project looks at the gendered division of labor in the home during the pandemic. I interview couples with children about how they divide up work in the home, from childcare to cooking and cleaning. The goal is to understand if and why gender inequality may have worsened during the pandemic.
