Bio

Hello! My name is Enze, and I am a student pursuing my MD/PhD degrees at the University of Michigan. I think it's fascinating to look at diseases from both a medical and a scientific perspective, as my patients inspire me to answer their questions and look for cures. I hope to become a dermatologist and bring cutting edge knowledge derived from my research to my clinic. I received my Bachelor of Science in Microbiology in 2017, have completed my didactic and core clinical years of medical school, and am a predoctoral candidate in the Immunology Program. As an undergraduate student, I worked on understanding the pathogenesis of Cryptococcus neoformans, a fungal pathogen which preys on the lungs and brains of patients with immune deficiencies. Now as a graduate student, my work focuses on the development of autoimmunity and its presentation on the skin, specifically of lupus erythematosus and granuloma annulare. Outside of school, I love working on projects that support each other. Right now, I'm working on turning my home into a little homestead, with a big vegetable garden, rain barrels, a collection of roses, and even a chicken coop! All of these factors work together and benefit each other, resulting in a better overall outcome. This is also why I love mentoring--it is a process where the mentor and mentee come together to learn and grow and share their ideas, which is what will result in an amazing project!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Foundations of Vaccines: Past, Present, and Future of Disease Prevention

In this project, you will learn about the mechanisms our immune systems use to protect us from disease, and the way physicians use vaccines to trick our bodies into activating these mechanisms without making us sick. You will create an infographic about what you have learned, and assess the effectiveness of your infographic. Finally, you will write a scientific article that incorporates what you have learned and your findings with your thoughts regarding the future of infectious disease prevention.

What is Growing on my Face? A Look in a Microscopic Mirror

In this project, you will learn about the microbiome and the roles it plays in our daily lives, focusing on the skin. You will then analyze the relevant literature and write a scientific review paper assessing the role the skin microbiome plays in common skin diseases, such as acne, psoriasis, rosacea, lupus etc., and how different treatments people use can change the microbiome and the presentation of the disease, for better or for worse.
