Simultaneous to working on my physics degree during my undergraduate days, I gained additional exposure through my minors in mathematics and computer science. After a brief stint in the private sector writing software for a financial data service and analytics company, I returned to academia to focus on particle and collider physics. My main interests are in theories studying what the matter we are made of is and how it came to be. Experiments in these questions can fall into cosmological observations or particle colliders and we will find appropriate projects in these domains.Project ideas
Billiard Table Reconstruction
At particle colliders, we accelerate beams of particles to near the speed of light and crash them into each other to study how they break up. Like a quantum game of billiards, we examine the trajectories of particles and their energies to determine how the initial break happens. In this project we would take the time to apply fundamental principals like conservation of angular momentum and energy to reconstruct the original pool table configuration using ONLY the final position of each ball. As a deep analogy to experiments like those that happen at the Large Hadron Collider, the student will gain a better understanding of simple physics rules applied in complicated situations.
