Bio
I am an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and 4th year Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in the Departments of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics. My research interests are in applying novel computational tools from complexity science, network theory, non-linear dynamics, and data assimilation to advance medical physiology. My physiological specialties are in cerebral vascular blood flow for traumatic brain injury and stroke patients and islet pathophysiology in diabetes. When I'm not doing research or reading textbooks, I love being out in the woods skiing, camping, backpacking or you name it! I love exposing my amazing 3-month-old daughter to nature, adventure, sports (and a whole lot of science). I also volunteer for my church's high school youth group and am extremely passionate about empowering young people. My tutoring and mentorship style is to listen first and speak later. I aim to empower my students to succeed by tailoring our sessions to their individual personalities, interests, and needs. I believe that great science comes from deep curiosity and confidence!Project ideas
Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.
Mathematical Investigation of Blood Flow During Exercise
Develop a mathematical model that describes how blood flow changes in exercise. This project will teach students how to take information from physiology and medicine (vasodilation and hemodynamics) and derive from it a mathematical model that can be used to represent the system. Students will also learn how to use mathematical models to run experiments, compare experiment output with published data. Depending on the student's interest, we could also use this mathematical model to experiment how the body may change in pathological conditions such as diabetes. Potential outcomes from this project include a useable mathematical model and scientific research paper.
Coding skills
MatLab, Python, LaTeXTeaching experience
I have extensive experience tutoring students from elementary school up to undergraduate and master's degree students in physics, mathematics, and other quantitative science fields. I have also worked as a science mentor - helping high school students create and execute their own research projects.Credentials
