My name is Tatyana Dennis. I am an accountant born and raised in Jamaica and immigrated to the US 6 years ago. I am passionate about accounting, and I love what I do. Being raised in Jamaica, it is normally common to know what you want to do with your life fairly early because of the tests we need to take, so I knew I wanted to pursue accounting from I was around 15. Interestingly enough, I wanted to study Law as well after graduating college but once I started getting deeper into accounting, I just knew there was nothing else I wanted to spend my professional life doing. I graduated with three Bachelor' Degrees last April and I started working in my field last August. My overall goal is to become a CPA at the end of all my studies, so I plan to start studying for my master's in accounting hopefully achieving it by the end of next year. I enjoy traveling and having fun with like-minded people in my free time. I have done a lot of traveling around the country and my favorite place has been California. I went last year to celebrate my 22nd birthday and it was an amazing experience. I don't have any pets yet but I plan to get a cat very soon.Project ideas
Stock Portfolio Project
In this project, my Mentees will be given a Hypothetical million dollars and will be asked to chose between 5 to 10 fortune 500 companies to invest in. Throughout the course of our ten sessions we will be monitoring and tracking the increases and decreases in the stock using NASDAQ and track the progress in an excel file. At the end, I will ask that a research paper be formulated using the findings explaining which companies are best/worst to invest in for a short period of time when both comparisons are made and historical data is taken into consideration. The end goal is to ensure that my mentees understand the value of doing research about investments before putting money into them. Also, this will help to make sure that the message of how volatile the market can be is clearly communicated.
Write a script for a cartoon that helps kids get excited about accounting.
In this project, I would ask my mentees to produce an animated series that caters to children explaining to them the fundamentals of accounting in an entertaining and inviting way. They will be asked to come up with characters, a short script for an episode and of course a topic to present on. I will also ask for an illustration if they so choose, to see what the characters would potentially look like. This will be focused on ensuring that they have a good enough grasp of the topic so they are able to put it into their own words and present it in a way that would have been attractive and entertaining to them when they were younger.
