Bio

Hi, I'm Joe, a Yale economics graduate and current employee at Google. At Yale, I studied a wide range of subjects, with my greatest areas of interest being behavioral economics, financial markets, and Chinese language, literature, culture, and politics. A recipient of multiple Chinese language fellowships, I spent a year in Northeastern China studying the language and conducting research on Chinese wealth management products. Today, I work on the product team at Google, where I am focused on smart home products. Outside of work, I love reading classic novels, watching soccer, doing yoga, and surfing. I am a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, and my dream is to see them win the Premier League someday.

Examining the New Manager Bounce in Professional Soccer

How much does a sports team's manager impact the team's performance? When things aren't going well for a professional sports team, the owner often takes the drastic action of firing and replacing the manager, even during the middle of a season. In this paper, we examine why owners take this action and analyze data from the English Premier League to understand its impact. We also explore the relative impact of other potential actions underperforming teams can take and make general recommendations.

Has Economic Inequality Transformed Innovation?

Historically, innovation in the consumer goods space has led to two beneficial outcomes for consumers: (1) an improvement in product features and (2) a reduction in product prices. In this paper, we argue that the increased concentration of wealth over the last 50 years in the US has shifted the benefits of innovation away from (2) by disincentivizing firms from focusing on price reductions as a means to achieve growth. To support this argument, we use the profit pool model and analyze the available profit pool by price point for a selection of consumer goods and electronics.

Perfect Waves: How Surf Quality Impacts Residential Property Values

While surfing is possible wherever there are waves, the quality of surf spots is highly variable, with factors like bathymetry and exposure to swell and wind playing major roles. In this paper, we examine the impact of desirable waves on the real estate markets in their neighboring communities. To do this, we analyze residential real estate transactions in select coastal communities and perform regression analysis to discern the impact of wave quality on price.
