Bio
My experiences of working with diverse communities across the healthcare spectrum have adequately equipped me with the tools necessary to serve as a bridge between the advancements of science and technology to improve the quality of life for people of various backgrounds and identities. Specifically, I want to encourage people to feel more in control of their lives and healthcare decisions, despite their circumstances and predicaments. Currently, I am a Ph.D. candidate (Biomedical Sciences -Bioinformatics) at OSU, and hope to continue working on my passions after graduation.Project ideas
Exploring the Function of Genetic Variations in Breast and Ovarian Cancers through High-Sequencing Techniques
Despite the completion of the human genome project in 2003, many new questions about human disease and chronic illnesses remain unanswered. To uncover some of the answers to this information gap, we can re-analyze datasets branching from the human genome project. For this project, we will use high-sequencing techniques to model function for genetic variations in specific human disease models, such as breast and ovarian cancers. Insights from this project can further inform other target areas for exploration and contribute to the development of new treatments for these diseases. Project Goals: -Identify genetic variations associated with breast and ovarian cancers using data mining tools. -Understand the function of identified genetic variations in the development of these cancers -Provide insights on new target areas for exploration in the field of breast and ovarian cancer research. This project involves the use of bioinformatics tools and methods to analyze large genomic data sets, and will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills in data analysis and bioinformatics while contributing to the advancement of cancer research.
Creating Interactive Data Visualizations with R Shiny
Many research findings are presented in the form of static black and white images, which can be difficult for audiences to fully understand and engage with. This project aims to bring static data to life by using R Studio's Shiny App, a web application framework for R. Specifically, we will parse research data, determine appropriate visualization methods for the data, and create an interactive app to showcase the data. This will allow audiences to interact with the data in a more meaningful way and understand the research findings more clearly. Project Goals: -Learn to parse data and determine appropriate visualization methods -Develop an interactive app using R Shiny to showcase the data -Understand how interactive data visualization can improve understanding of research findings. This project will provide students with experience in R programming, data visualization, and web development, and will allow them to apply these skills to create an interactive tool that can be used to communicate research findings to a wider audience.
