Bio
Hello! My name is Dr. Lei Wang (she/her/她) and I'm so excited that you clicked on my profile. I was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan and currently reside in the United States. I am an Assistant Professor in Counseling Psychology at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA. My research and clinical work centers around social justice issues, such as mental health among Asian American and Asian international college students and effectiveness of bilingual counseling (Mandarin/English). In addition to my day job, I am in the process of self-publishing my first book and hope that in the near future, I can help others do the same to elevate their voices. As someone who grew up as a Youtuber/blogger-wannabe, I also enjoy writing blogs and making/editing videos. The closest I've come to working with media was when I worked part-time for Netflix, translating subtitles from English to Mandarin. Finally, I've worked at multiple university career centers and enjoy talking to students about their career goals and explore the endless possibilities they could do with their lives. I hope that I have the pleasure to work with you and be a part of your process!Project ideas
Media Project
Depending on the scope of how much you'd like to accomplish, here is what I think we could do together in 10 sessions. I'm using a YouTube channel as an example, which we could also apply to blogging and podcasting. YouTube Channel: -identify channels that you look up and why they are successful -identify resources you'll need to ensure the success and follow-through of this project, such as tools to learn how to edit videos, video editing programs, recording tools -brainstorm the direction of the channel and the target audience for your content -marketing strategies, such as where you can promote your channel -a plan for the content of each video for a season or two -(if you plan on having guests on your channel), send out invites and set up a time with them -shoot/edit/publish the videos
Research Project
Here is what working on a research project with me would look like from start to finish at a graduate level. -discuss what your career goals are and identify how the research project can help you -identify your interests, questions that you would like answered through research -literature review: you'll search for the studies that have already been conducted and what they have found (writing up a literature review is an accomplishment of its own and we can present it or publish it) -identify the gap in the literature and solidify your research questions -design the study to answer your research questions: are the questions better answered in a quantitative (e.g., surveys) or qualitative (e.g., interviews) method? -recruit for participants -analyze the data and finalize the results -write out discussion: using the results of the study, what are the real-world implications? -submit study to a conference and/or journal to publish. Remember this is typically what graduate students do. We can work together to build a project that is more appropriate for you and your interests. I want to make sure you get the experience you're looking for!
