mechanical engineering, environmental science

Bio

Although my degree is in Mechanical Engineering, my current academic passion has been in Environmental Science. I have attended a number of seminars and symposiums regarding streams and water quality and have worked closely with Stroud Water Research Center deploying and maintaining Mayfly Sensors, a data acquisition and broadcasting device for monitoring stream water quality in real time. I am a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Pennsylvania with over 20 years of work experience designing large scale facilities. My personal interests and hobbies include - Bicycling - I recently completed a 600-mile ride from Reading, Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh and back; Racquetball - I compete in a league, Mountaineering - Successful summits of Denali, Kilimanjaro, and Cotopaxi; Landscaping - I'm attempting to eliminate most of the invasive plant species from my 5 acres of land - more challenging than mountaineering!

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Identifying Non-Point Sources of Water Pollution

Over the past 50 years, The United States has made significant improvements to stream water quality through the implementation of the NPDES (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System). This program identifies and regulates any point source discharge into bodies of water. The next step is to identify and control non-point sources of pollution. An important step in solving this issue is to identify where the pollution is coming from. Some type of continuous monitoring is needed to address this problem.

Sustainable Techniques for Reducing Environmental Algal Blooms and Nutrient Sources

The project aims to develop and implement effective mitigation strategies for reducing the influx of nutrients from streams into water bodies, thereby preventing harmful algal blooms (HABs). By addressing the root causes of nutrient pollution and employing sustainable techniques, the project seeks to protect aquatic ecosystems, preserve water quality, and promote environmental sustainability.

I have used Visual Basic to automate Excel Spreadsheets

Teaching experience

I currently lecture students, municipal officials, and the general public in my role as chairperson of the Tulpehocken Creek Watershed Association regarding environmental education. I have also mentored junior engineers during my career as a Mechanical Engineer. In addition, I have coached youth soccer, track and baseball teams in the past.
