Bio

Mr. Ahmed Gamil obtained his BSc (Honors) and MSc in mechanical engineering from PETRONAS University of Technology (UTP) in Malaysia. His passion for energy saving and environmental protection drove him to continue his studies in the renewable energy field. He has chosen Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies to be the area of research. Ahmed was among the few students who were selected to join the "solar tower project" as a researcher and MSc candidate. The main aim of the project was to evaluate the solar thermal power output for a small heliostat field under Malaysia's climate for electricity generation as a preliminary phase to erect a Solar Power Tower plant. The study had both simulation and experimental approaches. As a researcher during his Msc candidacy, he carried out an extensive literature review on Solar Systems focusing on shortages and feasible improvements, especially in collectors and receiver sub-systems. This tower project has raised his awareness of sustainability and energy security where he practically applied his knowledge in the field. During that tenure, he worked as a teaching assistant and tutored several undergraduate energy courses for 2 years (i.e., Alternative energy, Energy Conversion and Management, Refrigeration and Air conditioning). He also published 3 scientific papers that were cited in IOP (Institute of Physics, UK), Google Scholar, Scopus and IEEE. Over the years, he developed exceptional skills using CAD software (SOLIDWORKS and CATIA V5), TRNSYS, Soltrace, and SAM for BSc and MSc final projects. His motivation towards continuous learning and development allowed him to secure a part-time job as a lecturer at the University of Bahri, Sudan, lecturing four modules in 2 years, namely: Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), Heat and Mass Transfer, Health Safety and Environment. Moreover, he had 3 years in the industry working as a technical support engineer, then he was promoted to a managerial position as a technical and sales manager. In 2017, Ahmed was among the few applicants who were awarded the Fulbright Scholarship. He was offered a placement as visiting researcher at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He continued to pursue his P.hD in the field of renewable energy and carried out analyses on modeling and optimizing innovative solar tower systems with unique heliostat features to reduce costs, and target the US DOE cost for CSP, especially for industrial heating.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Solar-powered Refrigeration System for Ice Production

The project aims to analyze and design a solar-powered refrigeration system where ice production is used as a case study. The methodology includes studying two parts: refrigeration and solar systems. The refrigeration part is the vapor compression refrigeration system (VCRS) while the solar part is a Photo-voltaic (PV) system. Initially, the refrigeration system is static where no fan is needed, therefore a power input is required to only operate the compressor in the VCRS in order to withstand the refrigeration load to produce 35 kg of ice per day assuming 7 hours of sunshine. For the VCRS, refrigerant R-134a is opted for its availability, low cost, and no-depleting ozone gas.

Modeling and Analysis of Li-ion Cell Venting in Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Using CFD software, the Li-ion cell thermal runaway can be modeled and cell venting is targeted in order to prevent cell pack failures.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System Design

This is a basic project to understand the main Solar PV concepts, components, and operations.
