Bio
Hi I'm Julia, a current Master's student in the Classics Department at Tufts University. I study Digital Humanities and use various computational methods to analyze ancient texts and civilizations. I'm interested in Homeric Scholia, Ancient Judaism, and the history of classical scholarship. I'm passionate about contributing to digital tools which help students and scholars access the ancient world. In my free time, I like to do yoga, draw, and listen to podcasts. I also like to spend time hanging out with my pet rats Harold and Archilochus. My other interests include communal living, climate activism, socialism, and trans/LGBTQ+ rights.Project ideas
Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.
Mapping Social Networks in Ancient Rome
Using a combination of natural language processing techniques and network visualizations, it is possible to extract the names of people, families, religions, social groups, etc, from a historical text. Taking this a step further, we can use network analysis to create a visualization of how related the groups/people/ etc are to each other. This is based solely on the text we give the computer, and can provide interesting objective data on large bodies of text in a short amount of time
