Bio

In the third grade I lost a close family member to pancreatic cancer, which was when I first decided I wanted to become a doctor. I am fascinated by the human body and by the cultures and societies our species has cultivated. My interest in these subjects led to my formal education in anthropology as an undergraduate and medicine thereafter. I am currently training as a resident physician in the field of Radiation Oncology at UCLA and have a strong interest in prostate cancer. Outside of my academic pursuits, I enjoy doing outdoor activities with my wife and dog. We like to go camping and hiking frequently. My wife and I enjoy skiing and surfing as well. Finally, I love going to see live concerts and plays with friends and family.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Development of new cancer treatment with targeted medicine

Using our understanding of the human body and cellular markers, let's develop a new drug target to treat certain cancers. This project would involve a literature review of the latest research studying specific cellular markers that only cancer cells exhibit and designing a drug to target those markers. The goal of this project would be to publish our findings in a scientific journal and/or poster presentation at a conference.

Studying disease from a human evolution perspective

Ever wonder why humans develop arthritis or cancer? Do these diseases exist only in humans or in other species as well? Let's study human evolution and non human primate evolution to better understand why we develop the ailments we see today in our population.

Teaching experience

I started mentoring students in high school and have made mentoring a priority of mine ever since. As an undergraduate I tutored students and student-athletes. During medical school I helped facilitate mentor-mentee relationships between first year students and fourth year students. During my research year at the National Institutes of Health, I learned a great deal about the mentor-mentee relationship. As a medical resident, I have given many lectures to other residents and medical students and have written and published many scientific papers with other students and medical professionals.
