Bio

My name is Lucas, and I am a Data Scientist at The Mass General Hospital/Harvard Genetics and Aging Research Unit. With a foundation in Neuroscience and several years of experience at the CTE and Alzheimer’s Brain Bank at Boston University, I transitioned into Data Science to pursue my passion for computational neuroscience. I received a certification of completion in Data Science from the The Flatiron School's Data Science Bootcamp in 2023. My work focuses on uncovering the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease, contributing to a deeper understanding of this complex condition. I am proficient in coding in Python and data analysis in R as well as have strong background in many biological topics, specifically neuroscience. My current work is building machine learning models to eventually help with early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Outside of work, you’ll often find me biking through the city or challenging myself at the rock climbing gym. I have a creative side, too—I design custom rugs and am delving into 3D computer modeling with Blender. On weekends, I love escaping to the mountains to climb and explore the great outdoors with friends.

Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Teach a machine to recognize animals!

Using python, you learn to build a computer vision machine learning model that can classify animals by photo. In the end you could build an app that when given a photo of a cat, would understand that it was looking at a cat. This would entail learning some basic python coding and machine learning concepts as well as finding, understanding and cleaning a datasource of photos from an online source. After building a basic framework for your model, tuning the model to improve the prediction results.

Coding skills

Python, R, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, SQL

Teaching experience

I was a teaching assistant for a variety of classes while at SUNY Binghamton including Organic Chemistry and Calc 1 & 2 among others. I spent time teaching young child with Autism Spectrum Disorder in an assisted learning environment during college. I was also a camp counselor and camp leader for multiple years at a sleep away camp as well as a day camp and have experience working with kids ages 11-16.
