Bio
I am interested in understanding why some people have an adverse reaction to drugs and some are perfectly fine taking the same medication. This type of work requires an understanding of genetics and environmental factors that might affect the way people process, or metabolize, a drug. This led me to pursue my PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. My current research focuses on understanding how enzymes in the liver metabolize drugs and how differences in these enzymes might account for adverse reactions in patients. I love teaching these concepts to enthusiastic students, and in my free time, I like to bake, play board games, and relax with my friends.Project ideas
Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.
Investigating the Impact of Genetic Variants on Drug Metabolism
In this project, you will learn about how differences in genes can affect how drugs are metabolized. You will determine a gene to study and a drug that is metabolized by the enzyme coded by the gene. You will learn how to critically review scientific papers and synthesize information from multiple scientific sources. This project would result in a review paper that may be submitted for publication in a scientific journal for high school students.
Teaching experience
I have mentored high school students through WinSPIRE (Women in Science Promoting Inclusion in Research Experiences) as a College Prep mentor, where I facilitated conversations around university-level research and taught core science concepts. I have also mentored undergraduate students in my lab on fundamentals in our field and research.Credentials
