Project ideas

Project ideas are meant to help inspire student thinking about their own project. Students are in the driver seat of their research and are free to use any or none of the ideas shared by their mentors.

Demand Forecasting using Time Series Analysis

Accurate demand forecasting for a product/service is important for a business to better anticipate customer needs, optimize inventory levels, and improve resource allocation. This project will involve developing and implementing time series forecasting models to predict future trends and demand patterns using existing publicly available manufacturing/retail data sets, through Kaggle, NSF, publicly available University archives, etc. The data for the project will be analyzed primarily on Python/R (basic knowledge of these programming languages is preferred, but not required), and will include steps of preprocessing historical data, selecting appropriate forecasting techniques (such as Regression, exponential smoothing, ARIMA, and other algorithms), and validating model performance. The project will serve as a good introduction for someone looking to know more about the field of predictive analytics The final deliverable of the project will be a report summarizing our findings from the analysis, including a discussion on the accuracy of predictions and recommendations for resource management in the context of the industry based on your chosen dataset.

Write a Scientific Literature Review

The project will involve conducting a comprehensive literature review on a topic of your choice. Topics could include on any topic within the domains of sciences/engineering. The project will involve collating scientific literature from various public resources and will teach you how to initiate and narrow down the scope for a new research project. Further, it will also allow you to analyze and cite the collated literature, and present your summarized findings from the analysis in a journal-level acceptable format. An example topic for someone interested in Supply Chain Management, could be reviewing the use of emerging technologies (AI/ML, VR, IoT, etc.) to create sustainable supply chains.
